My friend texted me today to tell me that my ad had just come up on Google. Crazy.

I’ve been using Google Analytics for quite a long time, and Google Adwords for just over a full month (I started in March). Google Adwords is where the ads are coming from. It’s a simple way to advertise a business for not too much money – although, quite unexpectedly, my first month I spent $25.

Trying to figure out how to target my ads is a bit tough; geographic region was not hard to pick, but I still find myself tweaking my keywords. Google’s tools for this (keyword suggestions, telling which keywords are performing well and which ones aren’t showing your ad) do help quite a lot.

This “starting a part time photography business” is really tough. I do have a goal for this year, which, after taking out my current expenses, is about 20% met. Summer should be good for me, I’ll be advertising at the annual auditions for the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, plus I’ll have a lot more free time (and good weather) for shooting.

One thing I’m excited about coming up is that I’ll be taking engagement photos for two different sets of friends – a great way to build up my portfolio.
